Half Dome – Yosemite Musing

Blog regular Mike M. sent me this account of his recent Half Dome hike. I just gotta chuckle at you guys’ reaction upon seeing the “walking brain dead” on the trail. Most don’t have a clue what they are in for. I really try to emphasize how hard Sub Dome is. Many think it is harder than the cables. Oh, I hiked Fremont’s Mission Peak twice today. 4,400 vertical feet; 5 ½ hours. I be a tired puppy. Here are Mike’s words:

“Completed the hike yesterday and boy are my thighs sore!  As I was hiking up Sub Dome, I over heard many people say, "No one warned me about this part of the hike", so I chimed in and said, "you read the wrong book!"  Also, I don't know if this is an inside joke or an old timer joke, but half way up Sub Dome people would ask how much longer to the cables and several people said, "Oh, an hour or two more!"  After 15 minutes, one would reach the cables.  But the reactions of the weary hikers were pretty funny. Great book, the insight was spot one!”

Unrelated thought worth quoting: “Greeen Eyed Lady, lovely lady. Strolling slowly towards the sun. Green Eyed Lady, ocean lady, soothing every wave that comes.” - Sugarloaf

That's a great picture...the climb up those steps to sub dome was as exhilarating as the cables. Like climbing Franz Josef Glacier only much, much higher up and much, much warmer...and no expert guide to help!

Each day I read this blog and can't wait for September.
