Entry for August 29, 2008 - 6 Taco’s Please

Half Dome – Yosemite Musings

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the Taqueria in Curry Village. Just around the corner from the pizza parlor.  Check out the menu – I mean Taco’s for $3.25! Believe me, this sure beats a bag of trail mix for lunch.  I’ve eaten there and it’s real convenient.  Lines are not too outrageous. Another tip is to get a half dozen the day before your hike and store them in your cooler on ice placed in the bear proof container. Order them dry to avoid a mess. They will hit the spot for lunch on your hike. I suggest bean to avoid any issues with meat staying fresh after several hours. The burritos are good and tidy.

Entry for August 28, 2008 - We’re gonna eat ICE CREAM
photo
Half Dome – Yosemite Musings

This series on eateries in Curry Village cannot end without talking about the ice cream parlor inside the Curry Food Pavilion. If you stay off-site or at one of the Lodges, you may not know about it. Inside the buffet area and off to the right is an olde fashioned ice creamery. Really neat. After a long day of hiking and cliff gawking, you can top off your dinner with a nice bedtime sweet tooth delight. I mean ice cream cones, banana splits and most any sundae you would like. The prices are right and the ice cream cold and de-lish! During  a long hike, you will burn thousands of calories – heck, you’re doing your body good to get more into you. Besides your “I made it to the top” T-Shirt, you owe it to yourself to spend a few rupees and get his post-hike indulgence.

Related thought worth quoting: “I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!” – Traditional American incantation.

Entry for August 27, 2008 - Curry pizza

Half Dome – Yosemite Musings

In follow up to yesterday’s blog about the Curry Village Buffet, if you’ve not been to the park, you need to know about the little pizza parlor located right next door. (Not curried pizza -Curry Pizza!)   Usually when I am finished my Half Dome hike, I crawl to get a shower then head over to the Food Pavilion. Depending how tired I am and the time of day, we may opt for pizza. An advantage is that it’s open an hour later than the buffet.  But the lines can be horrendous. Plan on a 45 minute wait on a busy weekend evening. A line to order, then the  wait to cook it. The pizza is pretty good and will fill you up after a day of Powerbars and GORP. Another secret is that just inside you can order hamburgers and fries with about half the wait. I learned this after the buffet closed for the night and the line for pizza was out to the sidewalk.  Personally, I’d avoid the pepperoni the night before my hike!

PS … If you haven’t been to the main website lately I’ve added music and some other features – Reader’s pix and news. The book is now #60,978 in Amazon.com “Books” – gosh a Pulitzer next!

Entry for August 26, 2008 - Curry Pavilion

Half Dome – Yosemite Musings

A good suggestion for your pre- and post- Half Dome hike meals is the convenient Curry Village Food Pavilion. It is located at camp center, in the retail area. For about $12 you get a decent cafeteria style smorgasbord of epicurean delights. (Over 55 yrs gets you a discount) OK, I am not a gourmet, and a hot dog will do me fine, but I really like the food here. They have a balanced menu of fish, chicken, pasta, rice, tacos, potatoes, veggies, kettles of soups and a large salad bar. You can go back as many times as you like. Drinks are machine dispensed – I get about 6 cranberry juices. Boxed milk is also available. The deserts are nice. Always some sort of cake – chocolate or carrot. Be sure to leave room for jello or pudding. Just don’t pork out before your hike. And don’t eat anything that is unusual to your gut. You don’t want it barking at you on the hike. I don’t “carbo load;” most will be on its way south by the time you need it. Energy bars should do that trick. Post hike I just load up and bury my yapper in my plate.

Entry for August 25, 2008 - Midnight Lightning
photo
Half Dome – Yosemite Musings

Next time you’re at Yosemite, stroll by Camp 4.This is the overnight site for big wall climbers. This patch of dirt is the gathering place of most of the parties who climb El Capitan and the other sheer walls of the park. It’s fun to see the hard-core and wanna be’s living in their  vans and Subaru’s. Camp 4’s Columbia Rock is a 40 foot tall hunk that got plunked down by a glacier thousands of years ago. It has become a goal of the “bouldering” cult.  There is a route to the top that is called “Midnight Lightning.” This irregular crack seems to be one of the few ways to get to the top. See see how it’s done, click <HERE> and I’ll take you to National Geographic’s Adventure site. In a short video, world-class climber Tommy Caldwell scampers effortlessly up midnight lightning. Pretty impressive. Give it a try next trip!

Thanks to Sonke K. for this blog tip.
