BassPro and Sports Basement coming to San Jose

BassPro is one of the neatest stores to browse (after Fry’s Electronics). They have a store in Manteca – near Stockton. So it’s a long drive to get to the store. They are mostly a hunting and fishing store with tons of guns, fishing poles and boats. But they also have a small outdoors dept. The store furnishings are fun to gawk at. Taxidermies (all road kill, I’m sure), a large fish tank with real fish in it and good prices. They are also the only place I can find Heater meals. Great trail food – all you do is add water and the food self heats via an exothermic reaction. Well, they just announced that they plan to open a store in San Jose. Cool. For those familiar with the area, it’s going to be at Hwy 85 and Almaden Expressway. But don’t get too excited – opening will not be until 2015. The site is a vacant lot now so a lot of construction needs to be done. They are not a threat to the REI store in Saratoga – again it’s mostly hunting and fishing.

And today, Sports Basement announced that they are going to open a store in the Pruneyard in Campbell. I’m sure it will be in the Barnes & Noble site that just went out of business. That was a lot of square footage.

Sports Basement will open in March! They will be a threat to REI. They carry a lot of the same products and have good prices. They currently have stores in Sunnyvale, Walnut Creek, and 2 in San Francisco. I’ve given my Half Dome presentation at all of them. Oh, that reminds me – I’ll be speaking at local REI’s soon (March) I’ll let you know when.

And if you happen to be in So. CA, there is a Bass Pro in Rancho Cucamonga. With a nice restaurant on premises.
