Baby snakes

Half Dome – Yosemite Musing
Get or Give Half Dome permits<HERE>
Hawaii has no snakes. Yosemite has snakes. Many kinds, but the one to watch out for are the good old rattle snakes.  Here’s a couple shots of one near the Little Spring in the forest switchbacks to Half Dome.

He was scooting around not far from the trail. Just doing his own thing and nothing to worry about. If you stay on the marked trail you are fine. Sometimes the snakes cross the trail; get a good photo for the gang back home. They are not aggressive but can be territorial if you go poking your hand into holes. If you walk the required 100 feet off trail to relieve yourself, be careful. Late summer is not the prime snake season. In the spring when babies are hatched you need to be most careful. Seems the little guys keep biting if they snag you – adults just take one chomp and release. Another good reason to use hiking poles: you have a nice weapon to fend off attacks.  While at Nevada Fall one time, we went down the rocks to the railing and watched the fall from just below the lip. I heard a distinct rattle noise and jumped about 9 feet. No desire to check the color of his eyes.

Commerical message: If you want a nifty Half Dome TShirt, order soon – NO shipments Sept 16-30. See my website STORE.

Trivia: On Sep 6, 1953 the last American and Korean prisoners are exchanged in Operation Big Switch, the last official act of the Korean War. Wow. And they are still agitating.
Unrelated thought worth quoting: “Sometimes I wonder what I’m a gonna do. But there ain’t no cure for the summertime blues.” – Eddie Cochran

Hmmm, the 6 times I’ve done HD, I never encountered any snakes including my midnight hike last year. On 9/20, I’m going for #7. I’ll keep this in mind.

I was hiking Half Dome last week and our group saw not one, but two rattlesnakes. The first was about 4-5 feet long and on the Panorama Trail between Illilouette Fall and Nevada Fall. I did not see the second, but my Dad tells me it was about the same length and on the main trail between Nevada Fall and Little Yosemite Valley. Both snakes were crossing the trail.
