Half Dome – Yosemite Musing
Four more names were added to the Half Dome Honor Roll this fall. Shown at the base of the cables before their pull up 425 feet are: Maynard, Verne, Eric and Tom.
I like to share these stories so everyone can see that anyone can do this hike. We all have 2 legs and if you want to do this hike – you can get ready. All that’s needed is: 1.Education, 2. Preparation and 3. Motivation. These guys had all 3. They made their ascent on a nice Tuesday, September 15. The team hails from Mercer Island, Washington. The trip to Yosemite involved a lot of travel and coordination that many of us don’t have to suffer through. Here’s what Tom had to say: “I used hiking poles and utilized the rest step. Training-wise I worked up to 2 hours on the stairstepper, one hour on the rowing machine and was able to do Mount Si (near Seattle) and Rattlesnake Ledge back to back. All in all I paid attention to your book and I successfully completed the hike with no problems. Start 0615 – Finish 7:15 pm.”
Unrelated thought worth quoting: “Who wouldn’t be a mountaineer? Up here all the world’s prizes seem nothing.” – John Muir Atlantic Monthly July 19, 1869
