The cables are still not up. June 13. Last year it was June 16. And still we wait. Sorry to all who had permits for before this date. Like me. You willget a refund. So I’ve been up to Glacier Point and Yosemite Falls instead. Nice – very nice. As seen in yesterday’s blog pix, there is just too much snow to get up Sub Dome safely. Believe me, the park does not like to delay the season. It will be a major headache off them once the cables are up and running.

To show you that the blog exchange thread is worth trying…this came in from Donald A. and the permits were snapped up quickly. It pays to check frequently:

We have 4 permits for July 4 and would like someone to use them. Thank you for making this possible!

If you have not gotten your motivational talisman yet – consider ordering one of my custom “I made it to the top” TShirts. Pin it up on your wall to keep you training towards your goal. Go to my website STORE. Heads up though. I will be on another Carpe Diem quest soon. Leaving Wednesday for the other “Y” park – Yellowstone. This time with 5 other Hardy Boys on Harleys. The weather up north is even worse than here in San Jose-by-the-sea. Below freezing overnight. Yikes. I’m packing my long johns. Because I’ll be out for 2 weeks the blog will be done at night at Motel 7. Hang with me if I am late. But also if you DO want a TShirt – and why not – I need your orders by COB Tuesday so I can get them into priority US Mail. Check the website for sizes and styles. See front and back side by side.

I have a lot of “Laffing Mr Bones” in Small and plain in XL. All shirts are 4-color and have the Josiah Whitney quote on back. Yes we are trodding all over the top of Half Dome.

Looks like the day is June 22!

Snow melt over the past week has been significant, however hazards still exist along the upper sections of the trail. The Half Dome Cables are not expected to be in place before June 22. Installation of the Half Dome cables is scheduled to begin Wednesday, June 22 and we anticipate the cables will be in place and ready for access to permit holders by late afternoon, conditions permitting. The cable route will be closed early on the morning of June 22 in order to allow trail crews to work unimpeded during the work day. Once the cables are in place and the trail crews have completed their work, the cables will be open for the public holding valid permits for that day.

I am looking for a more official source but this post seems definitive. It also assumes all goes well on that day and weather is good that day.

Its supposed to warm up quite significantly this week, no? Maybe that will speed things along. 🙂

  3. Roberto Hernandez says:

Only one significant snowfield on top of halfdome itself. None at the very top of subdome. Rangers are doing counts, telling people many people are easily making it to half dome summit. But “USE YOUR BEST JUDGEMENT”!

  4. Alan Hudson says:

    Hi Rick,

So I called again today and spoke to a Supervisor. Terri states that there will be no refunds and that all sales are final for permits bought for dates before the cables are put up.

  5. Roberto Hernandez says:

I climbed to the summit yesterday. All the POSTS AND BOARDS are wedged in a crevice along the wide ledge half way up ready to go. The ranger said before July 4 is the hope. The subdome is much better. Only two small areas of snow on the rock steps, and a long snowfall along much of the smooth rock just before the summit.
