As much as a hassle getting permits for hiking Half Dome is, the next thing you must do is get accommodations. For my money I prefer the Curry Village Tent Cabins. For about $120 you can get 4 people in beds per night. Although they are placed about 2-feet apart and resemble a Refugee Camp, they work just fine. Spring beds, blankets, sheets, pillows and towels. Only 1 light and no outlets. The doors have a padlock and they all have an “en suite” safes. Bring earplugs. The beauty is that you are mere minutes from the Happy Isles start of the John Muir Trail – the Road to Half Dome.
Now the hard part. You need to get one reserved NOW if you plan to go this summer. June is pretty well booked solid. Last I looked at the on-line reservation site some of July and August were available. There is no risk. Then get your permit. You will be charged the first night – but you can cancel up to one week before our arrival date. You can go on-line or phone (801) 559-5000 to get your tent. A tip – request a spot in the 700 series. This is closest to the trailhead and away from the noise.
Unrelated thought worth quoting: “Zip-A-Dee-Do-Da, Zippadee-ay, My oh my, What a wonderful day, plenty of sunshine, heading my way. Zip-A-Dee-Do-Da, Zipadee-ay.” – Lyrics: Ray Gilbert
