Mist Trail Diversion
Because of the recovery efforts ongoing below Vernal Fall, the Mist Trail might be periodically closed. You may have to plan on going the longer John Muir Trail to the top of Nevada Fall and on to Half Dome. Personally, I would not want to bring kids to view the river above the footbridge. It would not be a pleasant sight to witness the recovery of a body.
Change to Mileage Sign
Another interesting development. Look at this photo of the Mileage sign at the start of the Happy Isles/Vernal Fall trail near the Merced River gage station. What’s been covered up?
The Emerald Pool info. I imagine the NPS does not want to make it sound like a destination when the water is so high. People might be curious about what it is and venture into the water. If you are not familiar with it, it’s the large wide body of water below the Silver Apron Bridge and above Vernal Fall. Despite KEEP OUT signs, people are often seen swimming there. Most get into trouble from the 43 degree water and have trouble getting out with the smooth granite banks and have to be rescued just 100 yards before the waterfall.
All are welcome
I snapped a shot of this person (it’s a guy) near the Curry Village Lounge. Presented without comment.
