The Info:

The hamstring muscle group influences the mobility and stress on our hips, knees and lumbar spine (the low back). Flexible and strong hamstrings encourage good mobility and stability in those areas whereas tight hamstrings increase tension and stress in those areas.

One of the better stretches to maintain hamstring flexibility is lying on your back and using a towel or strap to assist with the stretch. This position places the hamstring in a very relaxed position and there is little to no stress on the spine. This is in contrast to standing up and bending forward as if to touch your toes; this is not a very relaxing position for the hamstrings and so does not encourage an efficient stretch and it can place undue stress on the low back.

When performing any static stretch (yes, static stretches are still relevant and helpful!) it’s important to place the muscle being stretched in a relaxed position and to minimize stress in surrounding joints.

Lie on your back with your knees bent. Hook a towel or strap around the bottom of the right foot and pull your right leg up towards the right shoulder, keeping a slight bend in the knee. Pull just enough to feel a moderate stretch in your right hamstring and hold for 20 seconds. Remember to keep the opposite knee bent and foot flat on mat. Bend the right knee and return to the starting position. Repeat on the same side 3 times and then change legs.
