Proud papa Jeremy Schulz of Las Vegas informed me that his son and he hiked the 16-mile round trip and went up the cables at Half Dome. Hiker Gavin Schulz is a tough 8-year old. A real accomplishment. They also did it in about 9 hours. They must have trained hard for this. The Red Rock mountains west of Las Vegas has some nice hills.
Half Dome is a monster hike, even for those in good shape. My unscientific survey of kids reveals that 10 seems to be the average age. I do know of a couple other kids who have done it at 8. There is even a man who told me his 5 year old son did it last year. I don’t encourage records to be set by children. But you know your offspring and I say go for it, if they are willing. I’ve also seen fathers pushing their sons up. On the cables I heard: “Your grandpa did it and I did it…you are going to do it, too.” The boy was crying and you know it was a turn off to him hiking in the future. Bad.
Congrats to Gavin. Keep it up!
