First off, I want to give you the link to a homemade video that new Domer Michael D. sent me. (First timers are “virgin” domers until they reach the top.) Michael and his buddy, John, went up for the first time in August.
Turns out I was there that day and he saw me and my 2 comrades plunking along with our hiking poles. Anywho, I love the “bright-eyed” enthusiasm Michael displays on the video. “Oh my goodness.” It really shows what a neat transforming trip the ascent is and why we need to make sure it remains open for all. Odd that he put a commercial on it…to get about 4 cents. If you haven’t seen mine, go to Half Dome Cables: All the way up – 6,600 hits.
Good sign of the coming season. Costo pretty much has all the summer stuff out now and REI has moved in tents and moved out snowboards! Yes. REI has sent me a proposed speaking schedule for my Half Dome talks at Bay Area REI’s. They asked me not to publicize it yet. I’ll post them on the EVENTs page of the website when they give me the green light. However, I WILL be at the Sports Basement in Sunnyvale – THIS Thursday March 8 at 6 pm. They are just off Arques and Lawrence Expressway. Also, if you live near Stockton, I’ll be there on Wednesday March 7. This is my 4-hour “soup-to-nuts” How to Hike Half Dome class at Delta College. But if you are interested, you need to call them Monday a.m. since sign-ups are low and the class will be cancelled unless we get more heads. Use (209) 954-5013 I drive 90 mins from San Jose to teach it, so we need butts in the seats.
Finally, a tip of the hat and adios to Ranger Mark Marschall who retired at the end of 2011. He is the former Wilderness Manager who drove the permit process. What a problem to be dumped on a person. I hope YNP can hire him back in some capacity to help with the permit/lottery project. Ranger Mark was very helpful to me and I hope he continues to play a role. Ranger Ed Dunlavey is the current head of Wilderness.
It was 75 degrees in San Jose-by-the-Sea today. I love California! 64 Monday at Yosemite – the Falls are running! Tune in next time when I share some new info on the permit lottery.
