See http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/hdpermits.htm The quick summary is a LOTTERY. You’ll need to decide when you want to hike, then apply for a permit at recreation.gov between March 1 and March 31 – for all trips this summer. You can apply for up to 6 permits per application which can have up to 7 dates. You’ll need to pick a “trip leader” for this application and prioritize your dates. The trip leader (or named alternate) MUST be on the hike and you can’t transfer permits. In addition, 50 more permits will be “lottery’d off” 2 days before each summer date – if permits have not been given or are cancelled. A non-refundable $4.50 fee is collected for each application. Then another $5 if you win the lottery (per trip). While it is clear in the info page is that this is NOT the long term solution per the proposed Half Dome Stewardship Plan. That will come later and they can still change the above before implementation. I’m not back from my cruise until the 22nd and will digest all this and we can discuss. Internet is mucho expensivo and really crummy. Feel free to comment here anyway. Thanks to all for the heads up email.

I am planning on going to Yosemite for Memorial weekend and have my heart set on doing the HD hike. I’m the only one in my group who wants to do the hike. I hope I get a permit!

The applications for that date will be flood the park – a very popular weekend. The NPS has not said exactly HOW the winners of the lottery will.be selected? A robot computer chooses?….or a smoke filled back room with walls covered with paper applications. Hmmmm

    Hombre, this sounds nice! Bueno!
